What is a stress test & what do they do when they induce you?

Im 39 wks plus one day & my cervix didnt open up. Im still 2 cm I was 2 cms at 36wks. Is there anyway I can get my cervix to open up & have her on her due date which is the 22nd. My doctor wants to induce me on the 28th. I just want my baby to be ok, im nervous & scared this is my first baby. I feel bad for not opening up enough for her . Also what is a stress test ? What do they do?

I’ve only had nonstress tests, which is basically just monitoring blood pressure, contractions and baby heart beats and movements. I believe the stress tests are where they give you contractions, then do the same monitoring to see how well the baby reacts to it. They did that to my mom with my little brother (20+ years ago). I was induced as a first time mom this January. I only needed pitocin (no cervix opening agents or manual water breaking). It was intense. They started off on a small dose to get things moving then upped it once. It gives you strong contractions close together the whole time. There’s no build up to them like in natural labor. I wouldn’t worry too much. Try to relax in between contractions, breathe through them and try to concentrate on the fact that you’re having a baby. They’re wonderful, if quite a lot of hard work. Don’t feel bad about you’re cervix not opening up. It will happen one way or another and it’s not like you can purposely make it open. Supposedly walking and going for a bumpy car ride can help open the cervix and bring on contractions, but I’m not sure. Walking didn’t help me despite how often I’d tried to have preterm contractions. I was at 3cm by 36 weeks then stalled. And hardly anybody delivers on their due date, so don’t even worry about trying to aim for it. You’ve got plenty you’re already worrying about. I’m sure you’re baby will be fine. Even if it is a rough start most babies pull through. Good luck and congratulations.

For a stress taste, you eat something sugary to get the baby going, and then you lay down with moniters. Thats all you do. They measure heart rate and movements, to make sure your baby is fine…basically making sure the placenta is doing its job. If the baby does not seem active enough, they will discuss inducing you.
Dont feel bad for not opening up, very few babies are born on their due dates…I went more then three weeks over! Each baby will come when they are good and ready =)
    Good luck!

You haven’t done anything wrong!!! It is totally normal for first time moms to go over their due date. Remember it is an ESTIMATED date of delivery!! It is perfectly safe and normal to go to 41 or 41 1/2 weeks!!

some things that you can do to encourage your dilation are:
*Squats, yeah it sounds funny but that kind of bending encourages your pelvis to open up.
*Bouncing on a birthing ball. All that is is one of those big exercise balls. It relieves your back and hip pain too!
*Lots of walking. That helps to bring on contrax as well.
*Sex, yes, how you got baby in there is a good way to get baby out!
*Having the doc strip your membranes. It just separates the water bag from your pelvis and doesn’t actually break it.

But no matter what you do, if she isn’t ready to come out, nothing will get her out! If you want to, you can tell your doc to hold off til closer to 42 weeks. It is perfectly safe for baby and you. And you have a better chance of dilating more too.

As for me, I was at 2cm from 35 weeks til the night of delivery. Then I went from 2cm to 10cm and pushed out the baby in 5 hrs! Hugs sweetie! And try not to stress, that can delay labor.

Relax If there was a real problem they would be getting that baby out right now. Being induced is quite normal . I had to be induced with my first baby.. The contractions do come on hard and stronger but I only felt a few of them before they gave me a…. well I can’t think of what it is but it wasn’t an epidural. Anyway everything was fine and I have a beautiful little Girl.

BUT as long as you are not on bed rest there are things you can do to help things along!!! Sex and Walking are suppose to help the cervix open.

Good luck honey and Try not to worry.. If you get too stressed and freak out that isn’t good for you or the baby either.. Just relax… Your due date is just a guide line some women go up to two weeks past their due date. AND it seems to me that IF the Doctor thought it was a real problem he would induce you right now.

Hang in there I hope this helps.

I had three stress test done on me while I was pregnant with my son. A stress test that shows weather the baby is under any stress, meaning having problem, it monitors the baby’s heart rate. It is nothing to worry about, you just have a monitor on you belly that monitors the baby heart rate and if you have contractions. They want to see if the heart rate drops too low during a contraction. I was induce with my son so don’t be concerned about that, he is a healthy soon to be one year old little boy.

I can understand you being nervous and scared with your first child. My wife is almost due to have our fourth and I still feel like that. She was induced with the first two - they insert a cream near the cervix and leave you for a few hours. If not much starts to happen then they may break your waters and/or give you some drugs that actually encourage labour. I don’t know if there is any other way to open your cervix, but that is what the first stage of labour does, open the cervix to 10cm ready for delivery. This can happen over a number of weeks or a matter of hours, so don’t panic if you are only 3-4 cm when you are in labour, it will happen. And if there are any doubts then an emergency caesarian may be required.
If you are induced a week overdue, then the baby should be fine. Doctors and midwives know their stuff (usually) and wouldn’t let anything happen to harm you or your baby if they can help it.
I don’t know what a stress test is, but with all of my children they have monitored the baby’s heart rate to see if there are any signs of stress through fluctuating or dangerously low or high heart rate - talk to someone about it. Even look up in your local phone directory for pregnancy support helplines that may be able to give you better information.
All the best with it all and enjoy the many years of joy that children bring.

A stress test is where they put a moniter on you to listen to the baby when it gets active to check the heart rate. I have had a lot of them (I have 6 children). All you have to do is lie on the bed and watch TV and listen to the heartbeat.
As for inducing labor it is usually done by giving you something to start the contractions. It is usually given through the IV. The contractions will be harder than normal labor but bearable.
When it is time for your baby to be born your cervix will open up with no problem. The due date is an approximation and can go 2 weeks in either direction.
Take it easy, don’t worry about it, and go for walks as much as you can tolerate.
I had my first baby when I was 18 and I was so scared. I did not have anyone to talk to or ask questions about anything and they induced labor with me then.
