What does it mean if someone fails a treadmill stress test during a resting period?
My mom recently underwent a treadmill cardiac stress test. (I’m not sure of the technical term here!) Everything was going fine for the first 3 minutes (pulse, b.p. were both fine for the given incline/speed of the treadmill), but then she got reeally short of breath and had to stop. Once she stopped and sat down, her blood pressure and pulse/heart rate went balistic. What would cause this to happen and what could the potential outcome be? The cardiologist attributed this to a possible blockage and has scheduled a dye test, but didn’t elaborate. Has anybody ever heard of this or gone through this?
I had a stress test and was physically unable to complete the treadmill so instead they gave me an injection to speed up my heart rate . They want to see how your heart reacts under stress , There are base levels at which her heart would be expected to operate at , when these don’t measure up then it indicates a need for further testing . There are to many variables to elaborate without possibly stressing out the patient with information that may or may not prove to be a source of the problem . I do know that heart surgeons today are quite advanced and will get to the root problem through further testing . Best not to jump to conclusions at this point . I have known quite a number of people who have successfully undergone bypass surgery and return to normal , my mother in law being one of them . Comfort your mother and try and keep her from worrying as much as possible . Good luck and god bless your mother and family , there will be help available after further testing.
