Would you call "Social Anxiety Disorder" a REAL disorder or just something that most people go through?

I ask this because I’m wondering if it’s possible that the anxiousness an weird non-social behavior that I saw in myself and my friends as a teenager, which I thought was normal (tough to deal with but normal), would be classed as "social anxiety disorder"?

We have to be careful because nowadays, classifications are the trend. They go fast and without second thoughts.

How many are classified who in fact are just dealing with a slight problem?

‘normal’ is something vague. Usually psychologists reject the word.

What is ‘normal’?

One needs to be cautious with labels!

In order for something to be a disorder, it must impair your functioning.

It is very common for teenagers to go through a period of awkwardness, or shyness. That is normal.

But someone with a true anxiety disorder may be so anxiety ridden that they’re afraid to leave their house, isolate themselves completely, or have panic attacks.

Severe cases of anxiety can prevent someone from being able to hold a job, have relationships, and may even drive them to suicide.

There’s a difference between being shy and a little bit awkward from being somebody with social anxiety disorder. I think social anxiety disorder is commonly misdiagnosed but at the same time there are different degrees of it from mild-severe.

I’ve had social anxiety disorder my whole life. Some phases in my life were worse than others. I was always the quietest child in the class, always the loner, always the awkward one. I always felt extreme anxiety when it came to talking in front of the class. It’s gotten to the point now where I can’t even eat in front of people including my own family. I think you have social anxiety disorder if it’s gotten to the point where you can’t function in everyday life in some way, shape or form. I’m currently taking medication for SAD.

It is not a big issue. It is most common in those who are introverts.
And also with those people who have some inferiority complex.

I know a girl who is obese and she avoids going anywhere due to the fear that people will make her fun. Just relax! It is a mental disorder, but a mild one. Just don’t bother about other people, mainly the sarcastic ones.

It is more than just shyness. And it not uncommon for people to go through periods of withdrawal and shyness. It becomes a disorder when it persists and interferes with your ability to function in life.

It also exists on a continuum. Just as a phobia exists on a continuum.
Take phobia of dogs. Some people are able to walk past a dog on the sidewalk however anxious and fearfully they are able to endure it with great stress and otherwise be able to manage their lives. Others have such a fear that the mere picture of a dog can send them into utter terror and they are so afraid of even the potential of seeing someone with a dog outside their house that they become housebound. Obviously extreme and completely ruins their ability to function properly.

Social anxiety and general anxiety disorder work similarly.

Just as with fears verses phobias. Most people are afraid of certain things. Everyone is afraid of something but not everyone has a phobia. A phobia makes life difficult to manage life persistently over time to a mild or severe degree.
It is normal to have anxiety shyness social withdrawal but not everyone has an anxiety disorder.

And yes, take it from the girl whose barely left the house for 3 years, its real.
