Social Anxiety Disorder Experiences #1
I did this video on November 4, 2007. This morning, my Social Anxiety Disorder kicked in badly due to the announcment made by one of my professors. For like the first minute or so, I might be a bit hard to understand because I had to talk rather low due to some people being outside my bedroom nearby and I was afraid they would think I was talking to myself.
Video Points:
#1) My professor’s announcement that made my SA kick in this morning
#2) An update on the girl I talked about in my last video

Couldn’t you try some sort of controlled exposure therapies? As with people with other phobias?

I do the same thing …
I do the same thing. If I have to present I’ll either not show up or say I don’t have it. I’d rather take a 0 than present something. I also talk quiet on camera when I know someone’s outside my door.

i’ve been in your spot before doing a presentation. i can tell you the moments all the way up to the very second i had to present was one of the worst experiences, but i dove into it and only went along because it was absulutely necessary. as a result it was not nearly as bad as i could have imagined. infact once i got going on the presentation i began to enjoy it. as a result, i was up there for too long and lost points to my grade!

One time I did a …
One time I did a book report in freshman english class in 06. I did my book report on a small posterboard, and I had words written on the back of the posterboard so i could read through it. The problem was, I read it word by word and didnt bother to say things in my own words. Since then, I have never done worse than that.
I was holding the poster board, my hands started to shake which caused the board to shake too! And it was very noticable. That book report was a train wreck for me.

Yeah, SA is really horrible to have with some situations. Presentations is definitely one of them. How familiar with Social Anxiety Disorder are you? I can point you to a website or two to help you figure out if you really do or not.

I must have what …
I must have what you have, and its really really horrible. Ive got a big 10minute presentation to perform infront of my 12person tutor group in 2weeks and I cant describe the level of dread i feel
I know the usual thing of everone gets nervous but I know no one gets as short of breath and such an intense heart beat rate as me.
All imm guessing I can do is take it really slow until i settle into it, and try not to look to strange while taking massive pauses between sentences.

Yeah, I just force myself. On one presentation for class, I spead up the powerpoint slides so I could get through it faster. lol. It ended up being too fast! I had to play it off. Everyone was laughing. I just made a joke out of it. I got though it though.

I don’t have SA disorder, but I always hated doing “presentations” in class. Just let me get the done on my own time and hand it in, you know?

I feel I have a …
I feel I have a problem similar to yours. What I teach myself is that it’s all just a controllable state of mind. It’s about loosening yourself. Instead of thinking about how you should word something using specific words, word for word. Keep a warm positive mind set in while talking, and smoother speech will come out. Nervousness comes naturally. Don’t be worried about everyones opinions, you stand for your own. One can’t interest everyone. Try taking meditation for consideration, it helps me.

Thanks!
I try …
Thanks!
I try my best to keep that in mind about how people aren’t sitting there chanting “Screw up” to themselves, but it can be very easy for SA to overcome those of us who suffer from it. Occasionally though, like when I actually did the presentation, it ends up not being nearly as bad as I imagine.

I really feel for …
I really feel for you. Although it might not seem like it ,everybody feels shy or intimidated in social situations, even the loud and annoying people. I know it can be really difficult especially doing presentations, just remember people actually WANT you to do well because to listen to somebody at ease puts them at ease. I wish you all the best in life and take it easy.
