How do I find a doctor to make an appointment for treating my social anxiety disorder?
I know that I have social anxiety disorder, I just don’t know how to go about getting help for it. I am almost positive I need medication to help me cope. How do I find a doctor and make an appointment?
Talk to your family doctor or your insurance company. If you have an HMO you’re going to need a referral, if you have a PPO your insurance company should give you a list of doctors to choose from.

So you know. Medication RARELY helps for that disorder. I will say they gave me some Strattera in high school that did help me focus, but I still felt anxious outside of, say, testing. You have to learn to live with it, but a good therapist can definitely help you cope!
First, if you have insurance, call them to see what is covered, if anything, and if there is a psychologist/psychiatrist in your area they cover. If they let you choose, the best thing to do is ask around people you know (yes, I know you have social anxiety, and this likely limits those resources). If nothing else, call different offices you look up online or in the Yellow Pages and ask whatever questions you have.
You may have to "shop around". It took me four years to find a great psychologist.
