Can being badly teased cause social anxiety disorder?
I have been dealing with social anxiety issues for a while. I am in therapy and trying to overcome it. I was badly picked on (teased) at previous jobs and while I was in college. I am in my earty twenties. Now I feel like I am scared to go anywhere and I feel like everyone is whispering about me and looking at me - sometimes they actually are.
yes it can

I don’t think it can cause it, I think it actually works in reverse of that.
That social anxiety starts off milder and causes social awkwardness, which socially awkward people are the ones that will be targeted to be picked on. It then gradually gets worse to the point where it is worse and noticeable.
At least looking back on my experience that seems to be how it worked for me, since it was a purely chemical issue as when I started medication, my social anxiety completely cleared up. And my social anxiety was severe enough that it caused me to drop out of college, have never gone to clubs or anything of that nature.

it could cause it. but as iv told many people, and its easier said than done,SO WHAT IF THEY ARE TALKING BEHIND YOUR BACK maybe they are talking behind ur back because u have a hot outfit or good hair! In this world u cant please everyone, keep ur head held high, no matter what they say, believe me. I was teased and picked on and made fun of in elemantry school, but u know what i came out of it! there are people who like u and people who hate u, everyone has people like that, bu that cant stop ur dreams ur achievments. Just beleive in urself. this little rant probably wont help u or it did. but i just felt like saying it. So yaa….

I was perfectly normal, (i was described as the life of the party) and popular untill i started going to public school in 2nd grade. These kids teased and abused me relentlessly (they thought i was fat nasty and ugly) untill 9th grade. By that time i had shut down and had major issues socializing and with my self image. I do believe my social fears and problems came from the teasing and abuse.

I think it can but I am not positive. It is in your brain that people are talking about you because it happened so much in your life with people you knew. It can be difficult for someone to outgrow this but I think that you should talk to someone who can help you. Social Anxiety Disorder is a horrible thing and with professional help it can be cured
Good luck.

Yes, it absolutely can cause it. I’ve read up a lot on causes of social anxiety disorder because I have it. Being excessively teased creates fear of the same thing happening in new social settings, sometimes so much that it becomes a disorder.

Hey, I understand how you feel…
The uncomfortable symptoms like sweaty palms, "jelly" legs, extreme alertness, "impending doom" feeling and the fight-or-flight response.
I’ve been there. I’m an ex-victim. Sometimes the deep breathing or distraction techniques doesn’t work - a full-blown panic or anxiety attack happens later.
Sometimes you experience panic attack out of the blue and such.
Do NOT buy Panic Away, Linden Method, EasyCalm or the Panic Puzzle. They do NOT work - I’ve tried them and their solutions are similar - it DOESN’T WORK.
Medications do NOT work - I was under many antidepressants (Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil and Zoloft) and anti-anxiety medications (Ativan, Klonopin, and Xanax) but my condition was the same - no improvement at all.
The only program that really work is The Panic Attack Solution. It’s found by an ex-victim. You can check out his old blog in his official website to read up some useful tips.
But the package is the best - it teaches 17 powerful techniques and the real solution to panic attacks. I’ve bought it and it really helped me - it’s the BEST anti-anxiety package or book I’ve read.
His theory really makes sense and it works effectively!
You will learn why your panic attacks can happen without warning sometimes; why having stimulant causes panic attacks; and many-many other useful tips!
Check out his official website:

I think it’s probably more likely that the reason that being picked on at school hurt so much, is that the social anxiety was already there.
Social anxiety is the fear of being judged, so if people are picking on you, and you fear being judged, this is going to hurt.
