Any tips for a first-time traveller who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks?
My younger sister, who has never flown in an airplane in her life, is coming to visit me in Italy over the summer. She is very excited, but also very nervous about the trip, because she will be travelling on an airplane for the first time ever, she will be alone, and she sometimes has anxiety attacks or panic attacks in situations like that. She is 22 years old and she has seen her doctor about medication, etc. I’m just looking for any tips for how to make the trip as stress-free as possible for her.
Also, should she inform cabin crew on the plane about her situation, in case she does have a panic attack? And if so, how should she go about doing that? She is worried that cabin crew might over-react and think she is a threat or very ill or something, which could cause chaos on the airplane. Has anyone out there ever dealt with this kind of thing before? Is it ok to give a stewardess a note about such a condition?
I personally have sever panic/anxiety.. and flying WAS an issue…
First thing is to make sure she has some sort of anit anxiety med with her! Xanex… Vallium something to calm her… if she has already purchased her ticket.. have her call the airline and let them know she has anxiety issues… also let the head flight attendant know when she get’s on the plane…
I was able to make arrangement’s to take my crocheting on the plane with me <granted I had to have a plastic crochet hook.. but they did allow it> it helps to calm me.. and keeps me distracted from everything else going on…
Perhaps a red eye flight might be best for her…. the other passangers will be sleeping or more settled at that time of day…. if she can sleep en route.. it may help her also…
She will need something with her to occupy herself… to help keep herself calm… video games.. cd’s… books.. ANYTHING that works…

she needs anxiety meds and maybe you should just explain to her what goes on once you’re on the plane and all that stuff…and telling the cabin crew isn’t such a bad idea either.

Time travel is very stressful. It is better to go backwards than forwards. Nobody wants to get old fast.

Eh, just get very very drunk before the trip. Or vallum. some kind of sedative or something. There’s nothing to worry about being on a plane. More ppl are killed anually by donkeys than in plane crashes. DONKEYS kill more ppl than planes. you have nothing to worry about. In all honesty, you have better chances of winning the powerball jackpot than dying on a plane. but if that doesn’t help, there’s always vodka.

Your sister has time to see a Therapist and a therapist could work with her specifically on this as this is one of my greatest fears and I have had to work on this myself. Medications are always an option such as some have suggested like Klonopin or Xanax just to calm her nerves while on the trip. Not to sure about telling the crew though. That could go either way. They may be supportive but then again they may be overly concerned. She could ask her Dr. since you said she has seen one and get his/her opinion on that. They would have the best answer. I hope you have a great time together and her flight is not as stressful as she is predicting for her~
