What is hypnotherapy and does it really work?
I have anxiety problem and I would like to be hypnotized and be cured mentally, I just want to make sure that it is not a scam.
I am a certified hypnotherapist, so I guess my answer is a little biased. Hypnotherapy can certainly be very effective for anxiety.
Hynotherapy takes many forms depending on the client’s needs. The simplest explanation of hypnosis is that it is a state of deep relaxation in which a client is more open to positive suggestions. A hynotherapist might relax you and then continually offer suggestions or affirmations on being relaxed, particularly in situations that might have provoked anxiety before.
You might also be guided to a very serene location, eg, a beach, a forest, mountain, etc. In some cases, you might picture yourself living through an experience that may provoke anxiety. Yet now it is seen through the lens of calmness.
As a general rule, anxiety is fear about the future, so you can be put into a relaxed state and project yourself into the future accomplishing your goal with confidence and ease.
Anxiety usually has physical manifestations, eg, shallow breathing and tense muscles, so you might gain a lot simply by having a hypnotherapist guide you in a session to deepen your breathing and relax the muscles.
In my opinion, one of the most intriguing and successful types of hynotherapy is generally called age-regression hynotherapy. Here a client is guided back further and further into his teens and early childhood to discover the initial event or events that led to the problem. WIthout going into detail, the client learns to resolve that past event or trauma. That does a great deal to resolve the anxiety, depression or whatever the issue may be. Again, I can’t go into detail in a YA posting.
In general, I also agree with much of what Robert Shield wrote. I wish you the best.

no, it’s not a scam. it’s a total mind-over-matter thing. If you believe that you can be hypnotized, then you will, otherwise, it’s impossible. make sure, though, that you go to a licensed hypnotherapist. also, make sure that you follow up with a doctor for your anxiety. if you are like i was, you will still need to see someone for a little bit.

NO. payed 500 dollars to sit on a couch with tacky lighting set up to get dimmer and dimmer and have a freakshow tell me sayings to repeat and poke into my personal life. he said things like "take the worst memory of your life and picture it, now put it up on a movie screen, now light a match and burn it in your mind" and he showed videos of himself being advertised on the news stations to make me think he was legit. pssshh. waste of 3 hours and a lot of money…

Anxiety is a fear of the future but can have it’s roots in the past. A qualified Hypnotherapist deals with this sort of problem on a daily basis and he or she is, in my biased opinion, the best person to resolve anxiety problems.
Poor Lucy (see answer above) was conned. Plain and simple. The technique used with her was Neuro Linguistic Programming and NOT hypnosis. Having said that, most Hypnotherapists will use N.L.P. at some time or other.
I have been training Hypnotherapists for well over twenty five years and can assure you that most cases of anxiety can be resolved in a very short period of time.
So, how can you be sure the Hypnotherapist is right for you?
Firstly check for initials after the Hypnotherapist’s name and ask directly what they mean and if you can have a phone number to check out the qualifications. If he is genuine, he will not object at all and will be very willing to prove his credibility. If he or she is a con artist, you will be given all sorts of excuses why you cannot check them out.
Secondly, DO NOT pay any money in advance. An ethical Hypnotherapist will not ask for payment until, at the least, the first session is over. If you are not satisfied with the therapy, DO NOT PAY! Also be sure you have not signed anything to say you will pay regardless of treatment.
Thirdly, do not be too concerned about how the consulting room actually looks. If it is tidy and clean, that is all that is needed to produce good results. A dirty and untidy room will immediately produce resistance at an unconscious level.
Many Hypnotherapists, including some of the very best, do not waste money on trappings, they are more concerned about YOU!
On my courses, the very first thing I say to every student is that in a consulting room, the most important person is the client. Everything that is done is for the client’s benefit and if the client does not see that happening, he or she is with the wrong Hypnotherapist.
Hypnotherapists who use a distressed client to stroke his or her own egos, are the lowest form of life on this planet.
Oh, and BTW, an earlier answer was wrong when it said that if you believe you can be hypnotised, you will be. Everybody can be hypnotised, but not by anyone. It is the chemistry between the Hypnotherapist and the client that produces a hypnotic state. There is no such thing as a 100% successful Hypnotherapist. We all have failures inducing hypnosis. If someone tells you otherwise, they are lying!
I hope the above has helped in some way and I apologise for the length of this answer.
Good luck with your anxiety.
