How efficient is hypnotherapy for depression, anxiety and panic?
It depends to a great extent on the hypnotherapist and the susceptibility of the subject to hypnosis. It is really the CAUSE of the symptoms - why you have feelings of depression, anxiety and panic - that needs to be identified and treated. Hypnotherapy can treat the cause but it will have little effect if that is not identified first.
One method, which does not involve ‘hypnosis’ as such, is Emotional Freedom Technique. It is a ’self-help’ method, so you are in full control of the treatment/therapy, through expert guidance, if you so desire, but it can be successful if you simply use the technique as described free on the website. It claims (and, I believe, genuinely) to deal with many phobias and similar problems. I have seen videos of the technique in action and the amazement of people who overcome, for example, a lifelong fear of water or snakes is convincing. You may find it worth looking at.
http://www.emofree.com will give you more information and it has a list of recommended therapists, so you may find one in your area. Most therapists can conduct treatment on the phone, so you don’t have to even visit!
Edit: I looked at the Lawrence Leyton link. He says tantalisingly little about his actual methods but seems to have enjoyed some successes. Unlike EFT, he has a very sophisticated Flash website that actually says little more than ‘buy my software’ (£40/$80 - as he points out, this is considerably less than one might pay for a single session with a therapist). Perhaps that is what people want - Gary Craig’s method is explained in full and for free on the Emofree website but the sheer detail may put a lot of people off!

Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis as a form of treatment, usually for relieving pain or conditions related to one’s state of mind. Practitioners believe that when a client enters, or believes he has entered, a state of trance, the patient is more receptive to suggestion and other therapy. The most common use of hypnotherapy is to remedy maladies like obesity, addiction, pain, ego, anxiety, stress, amnesia, phobias, and performance but many others can also be treated by hypnosis, including functional disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Hypnotherapy is used in a number of fields including psychotherapy, surgery, dentistry, research, and medicine. Hypnotherapy is commonly used as an alternative treatment for a wide range of health conditions, including weight control, pain management, and smoking cessation. It is also used to control pain in a variety of conditions such as headache, facial neuralgia, arthritis, burns, musculoskeletal disorders, childbirth, and many more. Hypnotherapy is being used in place of anesthesia, particularly in patients who prove to be allergic to anesthetic drugs, for surgeries such as hysterectomies, cesarean sections, certain cardiovascular procedures, thyroidectomy, and others. Dentistry is using hypnotherapy with success on patients who are allergic to all types of novocaine drugs. Hypnotherapy is also useful in helping patients overcome phobias.
Hypnotherapy is used for nonmedical patients as well as those who wish to overcome bad habits. Hypnotherapy has been shown to help those who suffer from performance anxiety, such as in sports, and speaking in public. In academic applications, it has also been shown to help with learning, participating in the classroom, concentrating, studying, focusing attention span, improving memory, and helping remove mental blocks about particular subjects.
In more general areas, hypnotherapy has been found to be beneficial for problems such as motivation, procrastination, decision making, personal achievement and development, job performance, buried or repressed memories, relaxation, and stress management.

worked for me! only downside is cost, Hypnotherapist help you relax and be more calm to help you look at yourself in another perspective, whilst calm you seem to be able to resolve things better and understand whats happening. Self hypnosis is good and free once you know what to do, i still use it… have you checked lawrence leyton’s website?

Hypnotherapy is excellent for anxiety states including panic attacks. It will help you to reduce the anxiety and take control in a fairly short time. In some cases it may be necessary to help you to uncover the cause(s) of the problems so that the anxiety does not return. This will take longer depending on the nature of the cause(s).
For depression, some kinds of hypnotherapy can be very helpful but there are several different kinds of depression so you should really see a doctor first. Releasing the problems that caused or triggered the depression in the first place can be very helpful; drugs can be useful but only treat the symptoms.

Self hypnosis is better, your more in control. You can get decent tapes or Cd’s nowadays but it does take practise.
