Basset hound suffers separation anxiety! Dog howling
I suspected Dodger, our basset hound, was getting on the furniture when we would let him stay in the house while we went out. So I set up a camera to see if he really did and exactly what went on. Come to find out, he suffers from separation anxiety. The tape only holds one hour of footage and during that entire hour he paced all over the house, whined, barked, and howled.
Google “dog separation anxiety” to see if your dog suffers from it.

I’m no expert on …
I’m no expert on dogs but I’m gonna guess that part of the reason he’s getting on the couch is that he smells your scent on the couch and wants to be close to you.

Dodger is sooooo funny!
Great dog,smart
Basset hounds are the smartest dogs out there; you simply can’t have them do what you want; they do what they want!

I have 2 dogs with …
I have 2 dogs with separation anxiety. I totally understand what you are dealing with, it’s hard. At least Dodger doesn’t seem to be destructive while left alone. A second/third/fourth pet won’t always help (I have 6 dogs). We have resorted to leaving the radio or TV on for some relief but again it’s not enough.

Um… dogs cost …
Um… dogs cost money for upkeep, and getting a second dog does not always solve the problem. I’ve been in the situation where there are two dogs and one has separation anxiety. Neither one was a troublemaker, but when they were left alone together, and we returned, they had torn through the house!
Anyway… On a side note, I’ve never understood why insulting someone by name-calling is supposedly supposed to support your point. Very childish.

He wants to be with …
He wants to be with your scent, thats why hes getting on the couches. Poor thing. My dog is going through something similar, I have never heard her howl but the neighbours have been saying she howls for hours while we are away, barks and howls until she is hoarse. I don’t find separation anxiety funny in the least.

What would help him …
What would help him more than anything is more mental and physical exercise. This breed has stamina and needs an outlet for it. Tracking, running beside a bike at a slow pace, giving him a Kong stuffed with yummies or a Buster Cube and other mental toys while you are away would all help. Teach him some tricks. This is truely a case of “a tired dog is a good dog”! Hope this helps!

You may want to …
You may want to re-read your dog’s body language. Dodger is bored, not suffering from separation anxiety. His body language is relaxed. He shows none of the other signs: destruction, panting, salivating, pacing, digging, defecating etc that dogs with separation anxiety exhibit. His howl is an “I’m bored, Is anyone lsitenting?” bark, not a “I’m afraid to be alone” howl. Hear how he stops periodically to see if anyone is listening? Sep anx dogs just keep barking as they are in a panic.

We give our babies …
We give our babies a “going away treat”. When they see us putting on our shoes, they go head for the closet. It makes leaving a bit easier. One of the boys will still go lie down in front of the sliding glass door and watch us leave. He sleeps there untill we are back.
It does help having more than one in the house. We had 3 papillons, but we lost the mama this week. One of her boys is really sad now.
