They say that anxiety usually manifests during a trauma in your life, or highly stressful time in your life. I got mine about 5 years ago when I was in college and my father was diagnosed with cancer. I went through many tests just to find out i had an anxiety/panic disorder. Go see either a psychiatrist, or a general physician to get some help. Meds helped with my anxiety and panic attacks but the side effects that lingered I couldn't take anymore. Side effects were lots of weight gain, and derealization/depersonaliztion for me. Every one is different. But it did help though. I just got off them about a month ago, it's hard but I needed to learn to do it on my own and not depending on something all my life. I read books to make my mind think of something else other than negative thoughts. Listen to music, hang out with positive people, try to laugh more, go out and get some sun light, find a new hobby that will occupy your mind. That's the trick, you have to always keep your mind at peace. It's not easy, but you have to try. No one deserves to go through life with this horrid disorder. And remember that things always get worse before they get better.
References :
26 yr old anxiety/panic/depression/etc sufferer

I think you should see your Dr and a psychologist who can maybe try some different ways to get rid of the attacks before starting meds.
I take fluoxetine and it has definitely worked for me but took a few weeks for the medication to get settled in my body. It takes the edge off of the anxiety.
If it is getting in the way of your life you should get it seen to as soon as possible as anxiety can just get worse and worse left on its own.
References :
I get anxiety and panic attacks due to my adderral medication. When my chest starts to tighten I pop a clonazepam and feel better. If something doesn't feel right, do what you have to and get it checked out. You can suffer with it forever or get some pills and slowly kill it with time.
References :
I had them and they were almost taking over my life it got so bad. I was referred to a doctor who was also certified in hypnotism. I was very skeptical however at the point I would try anything. After 3 sessions I was able to manage my anxiety to the point it was pretty much gone! Ask your doctor to refer you to a REPUTABLE doctor who does hypnotherapy and give it a try. It beats taking meds if you don't have to and as I said I was very skeptical and found to my surprise it actually worked.
References :
I dont have anxiety attacks but I started to have one once which I got under control. I realized that I was hyperventilating and that was why I was getting dizzy and I got a bag to breathe into. But the interesting thing was that it happened while my tyrannical father was visiting me and telling me what to do 24/7.
Panic attacks have a reason! I`d go to therapy and find out what it is, exactly, that you are afraid of. I did. I learned to stand up to my father and say "No" to him.
References :
I had the exact same problem and have almost recovered completly from it. It took me from when i was 9 and now i am 14. I probably would gone through it better if I had seen a therapist. So i would recommend seeing a therapist. Anytime i went somewhere, or when to a special event, or did something special include fun events, or any time i had to leave my house or sometimes in my house i got such bad anxiety attacks that sometime i would puke. I have no lose why. I know what you are going through and here are somethingg that i used to help me. At first i used chewing gum, foods like bananas and tea are good to stay calm because they contain endorphins. (ddont know correct spelling). The way you breathe and think really changes alot. You need to breathe deeply and slower, and think straight while you have these attacks. I also prayed alot while i had my anxiety attacks and prayed when i did not have them fot help. It really calmed me down to know God was helping me. Goodluck maybe you wont suffer as much as i did. Do things to keep your mind busy, take up some new calming hobbies.
References :
I began to have these while still in high school and especially while driving.

I would suggest trying to manage them yourself before resorting to unpredictable medication, (which i have never needed).

When I feel the quick surge of one coming on I start taking deep breath. If im not driving, i will close my eyes. If I am driving I just move my focus higher or lower, towards the speedometer or the level the stoplights for a
References :
Check out: PANIC OR ANXIETY ATTACK: DIFFERENCES, in section 8, at ezy-build, below. If panic, see the COMPREHENSIVE POST first. If anxiety, go to section 6; page N first. Read the appropriate section. View the techniques for control of anxiety/panic attacks, in section 8, at ezy build, below. Begin, on this first occasion, only, by holding your breath for 5, or 10 seconds: this will give you the confidence to realise that YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR BREATHING, but not pass out, or die (your autonomic nervous system resumes breathing, if you become unconscious). Advice from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind. Then breathe out to the count of 3. Repeat, until it begins to take effect. Understand panic attacks, and what triggers them, in your life (if it is unresolved anxiety, or stress, see sections 6, [page N first - main anxiety post; try the free CBT & hypnotherapy] or 42, [page i first] respectively).

The paper bag method also works for most people, but is not suited to all circumstances, such as driving, or playing sport. Another alternative is psychotherapy, to address its fundamental cause, which is usually anxiety; read section 1, and examine the http://1-800-therapist.com/ & http://www.metanoia.org/choose/ websites, and use the locators to find a therapist, (and phone book, but only if necessary). I used to suffer from panic attacks, until I questioned what had changed in my life, at, or just before that time, to trigger them, which is enough for some people. Visualise as vividly as possible, a large, red, flashing, "STOP!" sign, and/or possibly a stern faced person wagging an index finger at you in a negative manner, then say to yourself as forcefully as you can, even aloud in a big voice, if alone: "I know this tactic: GO AWAY FOR A WHILE !!!" You may want to us either: "ruse", "ploy", "game", or "trick", instead of "tactic". It usually takes 30 - 40 repetitions, for most people, to establish a new habit. I also suggest that you learn, then practise the controlled breathing technique, until competent, then employ it, at the very first sign of a panic attack.

Practice one of the relaxation methods in sections 11, 2, 2c, or 2i, daily, and when needed. Also, give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. There is also a version for use in public places, (if you like, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples, but you would then be restricted to subvocalising - saying it to yourself in your mind). Sections 53, and 2, 2.q and 2.o at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris also refer: "Even though I sometimes suffer from panic attacks, I deeply and completely accept myself." Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms (as do medications/herbal remedies): you need to address the underlying cause, which requires some form of therapy, and Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy has been shown to be effective. Imagine that the cause of your panic; your anxieties, fears, your self doubts, self recriminations, all the agonizing "I'm-so-Stupids"; every painful "I-can't-do-it" are huge raging, hurtful bulls snorting and charging at you. You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador's cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by.
References :
Every time they come at you, hold out your arm with the red cape and let them rage and snort and go right on past. Because many people can't access/afford professional therapy, I include the EFT, and EMDR variant for them to try, free of charge (professional is best). Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy is generally available in most areas, but EMDR (see section 33) may well be worth trying, and is becoming more widespread. A variant of Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing therapy, which has been used successfully for those people suffering from anxiety: it is easily learned, quick to use, yet can be very effective, is on page N, of section 6, (the COMPREHENSIVE POST) and I use it before the relaxation techniques, because I have found that it makes them quicker to employ, and more effective. Most people are suggestible, to some degree, so you could either seek professional hypnotherapy, or, quicker, cheaper, and more conveniently: http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com "panic attacks" or http://www.asktheinternettherapist.com/ Stop Panic Attacks - CD - MP3
